As I See It - 02.21.16 - Art On Dart

I read that someone had painted a mural in memory of David Bowie. I couldn't quite remember where it was but I remembered the general area, so off I went to Houston Avenue and Dart Street. I turned the corner onto Dart and poof there it was.

As I See It - 01.30.16 - Animal Kingdom

It was the return of the Mystery and Fantasy Mardi Gras Party but before I could get my day started, I ran into these Polish treats at Kroger on Buffalo Speedway. One word: YUM!

This annual "party for a party's sake" was again, much fun. We had just under 1200 people so the crowd was manageable. Nothing like the 1500+ a few years ago.

In a Facebook message exchange with JD Arnold, I suggested he play some David Bowie...and he did...and he one of the songs was my favorite Let's Dance.

We've already set the date for next year but I'm not willing to reveal it just yet. Just remember...2016 was a short Mardi Gras season...2017 will be a bit longer.

As I See It - 01.11.16 - Let's dance

Sunday evening I fell asleep watching The Golden Globes. I awakened, turned off the telly and went to bed.

When I awakened on Monday morning, my newsfeed was filled with tributes to David Bowie. He died on Sunday evening after a bout with cancer. It was not publicly known that he was ill. And even more bizarre, on his birthday, January 8, he dropped a new album with a song titled Lazarus.

I only saw David Bowie perform once. It was in Dallas at Reunion Arena on October 10, 1987, when his Glass Spider Tour came to town. As expected it was a great show. Here is the set list from that evening.

One of my all time favorite lyrics is from Let's Dance. It is, "Put on your red shoes and dance the blues."

I heard someone on the telly talking about why we mourn people we've never met (in the context of artists, musicians, actors, etc.). And what they said made sense. It's because these people shared their talent and took us to another place. And such was the case with the incomparable, David Bowie.

A real Facebook friend of mine shared this on her page. I had never seen it. You'll love it!

Ch-ch--ch-changes

As 2009 approaches, I've decided to make a few changes to the blog. Afficionados of Str8 Up With A Twist will notice one of the first changes...the layout. Look for a few more over the next few days.

50 Is The New 30 (part II)

Birthday greetings go out to Belinda Carlisle who turns 50 today! Belinda was a part of The Go-Go's which was one of the most fun all girl bands ever.

I remember driving in a car with some college buddies from Ft. Worth to Indy during the summer of '82 and listening for hours on end to Beauty & The Beat. To this day whenever I hear a song from Beauty & The Beat I think of my college days.

I saw The Go-Go's perform live on a couple of occasions. The most unusual venue was Billy Bob's Texas in Ft. Worth. You see...

In 1983, David Bowie was on his Serious Moonlight Tour. So in response to that, The Go-Go's did their Serious Barbecue Tour and only played cities in the southern United States.

That night at Billy Bob's was priceless. It was a mix of those of us who were there to see The Go-Go's and the regulars who were there to ride bulls and do some two-step dancin'. I'm not sure about the cowboys & cowgirls but I can tell you that my group of friends had a blast!

So while I'm stumbling down memory lane and trying not to spill the ice out of my cocktail glass, why don't you enjoy this Go-Go's video.
