Heart of Fashion - Back In Black Masquerade Ball

Saturday night, Vivian Wise & Heart of Fashion hosted the Back In Black Masquerade Ball at Rich's Houston. A portion of the proceeds benefited HRC Houston and Texas Legacy Foundation. As with all things Vivian, it was an event to remember. Limited number of tickets. Dress in black. Wear a mask. Private entrance. Limited access. Password to get in. Surprise at midnight.

I had not been to Rich's Houston since a major overhaul of the club was completed in 2016. I must say that it is REALLY nice! Good job to everyone in involved.

So, combine a Heart of Fashion event with a redone club and it can only be a great evening! All different types of people were in attendance in various black apparel. At midnight, a Lady Gaga impersonator performed, models appeared and Vivian spoke about how were are all the same once we take off the mask.

Thank you Vivian for everything you do to make this world a better place!

Epiphany

January 6 is The Feast of the Three Kings. The Feast of the Epiphany. The 12th Day of Christmas. 12th Night. The beginning of Mardi Gras.

One of my coworkers brought a Rosca de Reyes. It is the Mexican version of a King Cake. It tasted like pan dulce.

It's a long Mardi Gras season this year. Mardi Gras is on March 1 so there is plenty of time for revelry and debauchery.

New Year; New Restaurant

Well, the restaurant isn't all that new but it is new to me. One of my goals has been to try different restaurants. SaltAir has been open for awhile and it is right around the corner from The Calvinator's Upper Kirby Crib. Pookie and I had not seen each other in awhile and finally found a day that we could both do lunch. He had never been to SaltAir and neither had I so it worked out.

This looks like a mound of food and it was. Underneath the yummy shrimp was a pile of yummy Freedom Fries French Fries. Not only did I not eat the whole pile of fries, I chose NOT to take them home with me.

Pookie and I both agreed that the food was good and we'll be back.

Fortune

I've had a yankering for Chinese Food. There's a Panda Express not to far from me but the parking lot they share with Costco is a bitch! Anywho, I braved the parking lot and made my way to Panda Express last night. Orange Chicken. Eggroll. Fried Rice. Fortune Cookie. And, here is my first prediction from a fortune cookie for 2017:

Wrong!

Look at this carefully:

Notice anything? Like...the package went from Houston to Ft. Worth to Portland (OR) and back to Ft. Worth. How does that happen?

To add to that, there were two packages mailed at the same time from the same place to the same destination. One package was correctly delivered. If anyone from USPS is reading this, please feel free to comment.

Thank you very much!

Sunset

So it seems that for the past few weeks, regardless of whether I've been in Houston or Ft. Worth, it has been cloudy, foggy, drizzling, and/or raining. Houston was hit with a really bad storm on the morning of 1/2/17. High winds. Hail. Thunder. Lightning. So it was really nice to see clear skies and a sunset.

Happy New Year!

In case you haven't noticed, I went silent for awhile. Even though I was taking photos, I was having trouble keeping up. Work has been keeping me really busy so by the time I get home from work, I just want to chill.

Many people have been lamenting how tough 2016 was and they have kissed it goodbye. Many of them have been doing this because of the number of celebrities we lost. Prince. David Bowie. Debbie Reynolds. Carrie Fischer. Florence Henderson. And many more. However, one of the worst tragedies experienced on U.S. soil occurred in Orlando, FL in the wee hours of June 12. 49 people were murdered at Pulse nightclub.

Life is full of disappointments but my biggest disappointment of 2016 were the election results for the presidential election. When I realized that Donald Trump was going to win the Electoral College vote, I became sick to my stomach. Jerry Martin with KPRC Channel 2 said it best when talking about Trump. He said just because we're giving you a chance we're not giving you a pass. Time will tell.

So what did I do on the first day of the year? I went shopping. I was told by a friend that whatever you do on New Year's Day, you will be doing that the rest of the year.
