Derby Day (recap)

Yesterday was Derby Day. The reigning Mr. & Miss Mint Julep put together a wonderful party and fundraiser to benefit Legacy Community Health Services. Mint Juleps. Barefoot Wine. Bourbon Balls. Brisket and all of the trimmings. Beautiful weather. It was a bunch of fun. And yes, on the one day out of the year that I drink bourbon, I drank too much bourbon.

There was entertainment:



Just like the Kentucky Derby when Queen Elizabeth visited, Derby Days had royalty attend. Queen Olympus XXXVIII Kaylynn Burns (far right) was in attendance and entered the hat contest. (She is pictured with some of the Krewe members who attended.)

AttyHou wanted to make a hat that was very Kentuckyish so this is what he came up with. Being on a budget, I wanted to make a hat that I could wear for Derby Day and Cinco de Mayo. The flowers are made out of cocktail napkins.

There were several horse races during the afternoon. I entered a race and came in 2nd or 3rd.

Barefoot Wine provided complimentary Pinot Grigio, Shiraz and Sparkling Wine for the attendees. Austin seemed to be having a good time giving away his stuff.

I saw John Paul looking lost in the parking lot. It seems that he lost his horse so I offered him a ride home. I guess if we had been at the BRB they could have played that song, "Save A Horse. Ride A Cowboy."

After all of the fun was over, we went home, showered, changed, walked The Calvinator and went to JR's. From there we went to Tony's Corner Pocket. However, on the way I took AttyHou on a detour and we stopped at Bering & James for a gallery opening. Needless to say, I'm a bit tired today. :-)

Caddywampus

I woke up this morning around 600a and was feeling a bit odd. It had nothing to do with last night's glasses of wine.

I figured I would walk The Calvinator, let the sun come up and warm things up outside, and then go for a run.

We came back from our morning stroll and I thought I was going to pass out. I laid down on the couch and fell asleep. I slept for another 3 hours. Probably not a good idea to go for a run this morning, huh?

I got derailed last night but it was in a good way. I went to a Table Captain Kick-off Party for HRC. It was at Bering & James. My plan was to stay there for a bit and then go to In And Out for a cocktail party for Ginger Grant's birthday.

Had some good political discussions. Of course I was hanging out with Hillary's peeps. I got to meet Special K from 104 KRBE.

On my way out of Bering & James, I saw one of the owners and reminded him that we had met when the Krewe had an event there. Then I mentioned to him that I had realized a few months ago that we have a mutual friend. And that's when the floodgates opened!

He and I had met MANY years ago and have additional mutual friends. We chatted and laughed and before I knew it the party had wrapped up and the caterer was cleaning up. It was time to make my exit.

I really don't remember driving home because I was reliving the moment that we realized our worlds had collided again.

Ginger, if you're reading this I hope that it was a fun time and sorry to have missed you at In And Out.

Art Of The Costume, Fort Worth & G's Party

I'm REALLY trying to get caught up with my photos, postings, etc. So I spent the better part of this afternoon creating photos, fixing red eyes, resizing photos, adjusting the color, etc. So in the words of Jackie Gleason, "And away we go!"

Krewe of Olympus had a fabulous party on July 14. Art Of The Costume allowed our guests to get an up close look at some of the costumes. We had the party at Bering & James and it was a great location and great people to work with. If you're looking to purchase some art, I suggest that you go see them. Eric from Barefoot Wines provided wine for the event. I favor their Pinot Grigio. (I've always thought that a good, chilled Pinot Grigio is perfect for the hot, humid Houston weather.)

Riddle Me This

A few readers attempted to figure out my posting on July 19, 2007. Those were the coordinates for Houston and Haltom City (a suburb of Fort Worth). The Calvinator and I took the Cal Mobile on roadtrip to visit la familia. Roni & Joey were leaving for Cabo San Jose so I wanted to see them before they departed.

I was actually amazed at how green it was up there! Normally during this time of year everything is brown and burned looking but they had been getting more than their share of rain. It was nice to see "...the green, green, grass of home."

While I was there we ate at my Godparents restaurant. I'm telling you...there is no food like the food at Mi Cocinita. Every now and then Texas Monthly will give them a write up about being some of the best Tex-Mex food in Ft. Worth and they'll get a mention every now and then in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. They're difficult to find and keep odd hours so if you're going to Ft. Worth, let me know and I'll give you the details. And be sure to tell them, Timmy sent ya.
