Jukebox Wednesday
Anywho, Trash Disco was fun. Ginger Grant did a nice recap here. Thank you to everyone who attended.
Now...onto music for today.
Kevin clued me on this song a few weeks ago and I cannot get it out of my head! I play in The Cal Mobile. I play it when I'm running. I hum it for no reason. It's one of those songs that I think Kaye Sedilla should consider for her comeback in July 2010. Enjoy!

Miss Mint Julep 2009 (brief recap), Jukebox Wednesday and Where In The World Is Kaye Sedilla?
Sunday was the 7th Annual Miss Mint Julep Contest. Miss Ginger Grant has done a great recap here.
This event is known for launching the career of many performers. Seven years ago, Kaye Sedilla made her debut and the entertainment world has never been the same. This year, Kitty Kash made her debut and brought down the house! She even did an encore and being true to her name, she brought in the cash. These photos are from Bryan H.

Speaking of Kaye Sedilla, she sent her 1/2-brother Ben Chilada and The Chimichangas to perform on her behalf.
Nasty rumors were floating around the BRB about the whereabouts of Kaye Sedilla. It has been noted before that Kaye is in rehab in Palm Springs. However, someone stated that she is being detained there because she has been slinging tortillas at the other residents. Someone else said that she really isn't in Palm Springs but that she has been deported because she was caught smuggling wigs and falsies. I overheard someone else say that Kaye was being detained in Palm Springs because she can't pay her bill. Now THAT is probably the truth.
This was seen on the side of milk cartons that were at the BRB. Do think we can find Kaye and bring her back in 2010?

Jukebox Wednesday is dedicated to Kitty Kash. You can view the real video (which won't let me post it) here
or below you can view Katy Perry performing Waking Up In Vegas.

Kudos to Kaye!
Kaye was a runnerup in OutSmart Magazine's Gayest and Greatest. Even though Kaye did not get the top award I am sure she will be honored to know that she was mentioned.
Kaye is still in rehab but I will let her know that she received some press. Maybe this is just what Kaye needs to help her through rehab?

For Your Consideration
Kaye would like for you to consider voting for her in Out Smart Magazine's 12th Annual Readers' Choice Awards (Houston). She would also like for you to consider voting for Krewe of Olympus for Community Organization and/or Philanthropic Organization. And she does have one more request, please consider Mystery & Fantasy Mardi Gras Party for Social Organization.
Kaye's Kommuniqué has a few notes to it also:
1. The icon for voting is on the right side of the homepage;
2. Be sure to indicate that you are voting for Houston categories;
3. You don't have to have a nomination for every category.
Voting for Kaye will definitely give her a lift during her period of rehab.

50 Is The New 30
I arrived at Memorial Park for my Saturday run. Wasn't quite sure if I was up to a run. Not the best thing to do after a full Mexican dinner at Cyclone Anayas (with frozen Margarita-Sangria Swirls) from the night before. I was in my WWMPD?* mood.
So I turned on the iPod nano and wasn't really paying attention to the playlist. The first song that played was Madonna's Give It To Me. The coincidence? Today is her birthday! Once again, the nano spoke to me through music.
Birthday greetings go out to Madge, Mo, The Material Girl, Madonna!

Madonna is celebrating her 50th birthday today. I have a few more years before I hit the Big 5-0 so I have bought into the idea of 50 being the new 30. In fact, last week I was told by someone that he thought I was in my thirties.
Her Madgesty is often the target of criticism; some of it from Kaye Sedilla. In spite of that, she is still raking in the dough and adopting kids. Last year I did a brief tribute to Madonna. She is a business woman that knows how to keep us entertained and she knows how to reinvent herself.
One of the things I forgot to mention last year was an interview that was done on the 10th Anniversary of MTV. The president of MTV was asked, "Where would Madonna be without MTV?" He replied, "Where would MTV be without Madonna?" Definitely a symbiotic relationship.
Mo, if you're reading this, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! In the words of ABBA, "Thank you for the music..." and in the words of Rihanna, "Please don't stop the music..."
OVERHEARD AFTER DINNER:
Person #1: "I wouldn't pay $20 to see a Madonna concert."
Person #2: "Oh? Hmmm....but you paid $250 to see Kaye Sedilla!"

I Lost My Faith. You Gave Me Hemoroids. Now I Can't Eat Tortillas.
Here is my summation:
- Joel Osteen and his wife Vicki board a Continental flight to Vail, Colorado, U.S.A.
- Vicki sees some liquid on her First Class seat arm rest and asks flight attendant Sharon Brown to clean it up.
- An argument ensues for whatever reason.
- Sharon says Vicki pushed her on her way to the cockpit to ask the captain to intervene.
- Vicki, Joel and family leave the plane.
- Houston Chronicle and other media sources report breaking news.
- Time passes and no criminal charges are filed.
- Vicki pays some sort of FAA fine because she tried to get to the cockpit.
- Sharon loses her faith in her church and gets hemorrhoids and blames it on Vicki.
- Life goes on for Vicki and Joel.
- Sharon decides that she wants 10% of Vicki's net worth because she lost her faith and got hemorroids.
- Trial started this past week in Houston, Texas home of crazy women: Anna Nicole Smith; Clara Harris (ran over her cheating husband with a Mercedes); Lisa Nowak (astronaut who drove to Orlando in a wig and a diaper to knock-off her boyfriend's other love interest); Wanda Holloway (the cheerleader's mom who was going to knock-off the mother of another cheerleader); Barbara Bush (who said that the people of New Orleans were better off living in the Astrodome after Hurricane Katrina); and just for fun, home of the Super Bowl that flashed Janet Jackson's titty and the world came to a stand still in prime time because we just don't do that on the telly. We got the crazy women I tell ya! EDIT: I remembered one other crazy woman here in Houston, Andrea Yates. She drowned her five children.
- Vicki says that just like Str8 Up With A Twist, I use my hands when I talk and I touch people. I was just being me.
OK. If you're going to lose your faith after getting shoved by a preacher's wife...honey, that faith was on thin ice to begin with!
Let me say something. I'm Roman Catholic and proud of it. This is the religion that instigated the Spanish Inquisition. We produced the Crusades. We sent the missionaries to America to indoctrinate the Native Americans to our religion. We didn't intervene during the Holocaust. We have endured priest molestation charges.
I went to twelve years of Catholic school where the nuns, brothers and priests were the final word and there was no arguing. If they said it, then so be it. So if anyone should lose faith and have hemorrhoids, it is me.
And believe it or not, I ain't filing a lawsuit against anybody and I still try to attend Sunday Mass every Sunday. Do you see ME filing suit because I get acid indigestion? No! I have a cocktail and get over it.
There needs to be some type of control over who can sue and who can't sue. The fact that criminal charges were never filed and this has ended up in a civil court says quite a bit. Somebody wants some money. Just sayin'.
So what does this have to do with tortillas?
Well...Friday night at Olympus Goes Olympic, someone was talking about Kaye Sedilla. I heard him say that Kaye Sedilla molested him on the patio of Rich's two years ago during Miss Mint Julep. He said that when it was over his face was smeared with Kaye Sedilla's lipstick and his shirt had been stripped off of him. (Kaye Sedilla does love a man with a hairy chest.)
I heard this person say that after that incident he can no longer eat tortillas.
Kaye, if you're reading this...you might slapped with a lawsuit in civil court because someone can no longer eat tortillas thanks to you. Might be time for you to start asking Joel Osteen to pray for you! And while you're at it, hire Rusty Hardin. Just sayin'.

Ramblings Of A Caffeinated Mind 15.0
Look Ma! No Nosebleed!
To my friends who live outside of I-610 (known as The Loop to us Houstonians) you know I love you so please don't be offended by these next comments.
Yesterday I was invited to Friend Floyd & Friend Mike's house. I had only been there one time and it was after I landed at IAH and had to drop off some stuff for a Krewe garage sale. It was at night and I remember it being a ways out but I really didn't remember where they live.
So a couple of weeks ago I received an evite to a pool party at their house and I accepted. So I Googled where they live and was a bit surprised to see that it is about 30+ miles from NoRO. OY!
Before I left NoRO, I made preparations from my trip. Calvin had been walked, fed and had plenty of water. I had bread crumbs to leave a trail in case I couldn't find my way home. I packed a snack for the journey. I packed cotton balls. You see...
For those of us that live ITL (Inside The Loop), legend has it that if you go too far out you will get a nosebleed. Not only did I travel OTL (Outside The Loop), I traveled outside Beltway 8 AND FM 1960! Unheard of I tell ya!
I'm glad I made the trek. It was a good group of people and it was nice to be able to sit and talk and not have to scream over loud noise and music at a bar to carry on a conversation. Too many friends to list who were there.
And the food! Let's just say that after two trips to the trough there was no way I was taking my shirt off and showing my stuffed stomach pooching out over my swimsuit. It would have looked like a double stuffin' muffin top...and not pretty.
Friend Mike is a good cook and had all kinds of food. Tamales, grilled chicken, steak bites, grilled sausage, fruits, vegetables, potato salad, macaroni salad, desserts, poppers (not the kind you snort, the kind you eat) and best of all was this other grilled chicken that was stuffed with cream cheese, jalapenos, assorted bell peppers and wrapped in bacon.
It was open bar with a nice lady who was bartending. However, considering that I had a drive back down I-45 I knew better than to partake of too many adult beverages. I can be responsible you know.
Kaye Sedilla/Sopa Pilla was the topic of discussion several times during the party. Many people were asking how she is doing in rehab at The Betty Ford Center. I have many messages of hope to give her. Kaye Sedilla/Sopa Pilla...if you're reading this, everybody is pulling for you dahling!
Spending time at Friend Floyd & Friend Mike's was well worth the journey. And I did not get a nosebleed and didn't have to get into my snack pack.
Cat Fight
The other night I had dinner with some friends at their house. While we were eating they mentioned that their cat had been missing for 4 days. Toward the end of the evening the cat returned (it was actually sitting on The Cal Mobile). It looked like it had been in a fight. This made me think of my favorite cat fight from a movie.
(This clip is kind of long but the best part is from the beginning to 3:33).
Valley of the Dolls was released in 1967. My mother and our neighbor so wanted to see the movie but they couldn't find a babysitter. So they took us kids with them to the drive-in. I really didn't pay too much attention to the movie. It wasn't until MANY years later that I watched it again and realized how campy it is. It has become one of my favorite movies.
Then, in 1995 Unzipped, the frockumentary, was released. At one point in the movie Isaac Mizrahi quotes a line from Valley of the Dolls:
"There's only one star in a Helen Lawson show, and that's ME baby! Remember?" Classic line!
And in the sense of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, Sandra Bernhard was in Unzipped and she was on Project Runway the other night. So you see, it all gets back to Valley of the Dolls...or in my twisted mind many things I like all related to Valley of the Dolls. And just to prove this point, someone has done a Valley of the Dolls video set to Amy Winehouse's Rehab.
Some great lines from Valley of the Dolls:
Helen Lawson: They drummed you out of Hollywood, so you come crawling back to Broadway. But Broadway doesn't go for booze and dope. Now get out of my way, I've got a man waiting for me.
Jennifer North: I wouldn't pay any attention to that. You know how bitchy fags can be!
Neely O'Hara: Boobies, boobies, boobies. Nothin' but boobies. Who needs em?
Neely O'Hara: "I have to get up at five o'clock in the morning and SPARKLE, Neely, SPARKLE!"
Neely O'Hara: I want a doll! I want a doll!
Neely O'Hara: [drunk in a bar] Who's stoned? I am merely traveling incognito.
Neely O'Hara: Mel? God? Neely?... NEEEEEEELYYY O'HARAAAAAAAA!
(Stage manager): Neely? Neely open the door, you're on. Neely!
Neely O'Hara: Hi!
(Stage manager): My God. You've got on your costume for the second act.
Neely O'Hara: So? I'll do the second act first!

Ramblings Of A Caffeinated Mind 14.1
July 31, 2008 will mark the 16th year of my arrival in Houston. The past 16 years have been eventful. There have been more ups than downs. Along the way I have been a ton of wonderful people and a handful of not so wonderful people.
I know today is the the 28th but I'm at that point in my life where if I don't write it down immediately, I forget. Old age? Hmmmm.
Anywho. Just wanted to thank everyone for 16 fun years in the Bayou City. Let's hope there are many more to come.
And somewhere in my boxes of memories (really, there are boxes stuffed with photos, etc.) is a photo of my friend Robb who drove the Ryder truck for me. I took a picture of this little white boi in a big yellow truck at a truck stop off of I-45. (Remember in Jumpin Jack Flash when Whoopi Goldberg is using the pay phone to call the cops and she says, "I'm a little black lady in a big silver box. You can't miss me.")
In case you missed...

Kaye's Kommunique
The other night I arrived at Quadra (at Status) a bit late. The crowd was thinning out but I still had the opportunity to see a few folks.
Someone that I did not expect to meet was Toma(s) Tillo! Toma(s) Tillo is a long lost brother of Kaye Sedilla. Toma(s) and Kaye found each other earlier this year when she was doing her lounge act in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. He didn't know he had a sister, much less a sister who is an international star, but when he walked into the lounge at Hotel Casa Linda he knew they were related. You see...
Kaye and Toma(s) both have big red hair with dark roots. Toma(s) would not let me take a photo of him but let me just say the resemblance IS THERE and that is how I knew he must be related to Kaye Sedilla.
Although communication with clients at The Betty Ford Center is limited, Toma(s) Tillo was able to speak briefly with Kaye Sedilla...well, let's just say she thinks she is Sopa Pilla. Toma(s) said that until Kaye/Sopa gets over her amnesia they will not be able to deal with her other issues.
Kaye/Sopa thinks she is going to be there for a long, long, time. Her spirits are high, just like her hair. Liz and Liza both sent Kaye/Sopa a message of hope and that really lifted her spirits.
Kaye/Sopa can't remember much about what happened on July 20 but she is sure that she was fabulous and wants to thank everyone who showed up.
If I hear anything else from Toma(s) or Cha Lupe (Kaye's 1/2-sister from the wrong side of the tracks), I will let you know.
Heat Wave
It is hotter than Hades here in Houston. These temps are almost like the temps I lived with in Ft. Worth! OY! At least the humidity is low. And yes, I'm sweating.
Church
Yesterday was my first day to assist with Communion during the 5:00 p.m. at St. Anne's. As a child & teenager, I was an altar boy (acolyte) for many, many years. So this was almost second nature to me but I still got nervous. You see...
There are steps that lead up to the altar at St. Anne's and they are made of marble. The last thing I wanted to do was fall down and drop the chalice. It is standing room only at the 5:00 p.m. Mass and in this day of YouTube, I so didn't want to be featured on YouTube. When the wine is consecrated you just can't wipe it up and get on with your life, there is a ritual that needs to be performed. There is a reason for my fear. You see...
Many years ago I was at the 12:00 noon Mass at St. George's in Ft. Worth. I wanted to sing in the choir that day but they needed an altar boy and my mother insisted that I be the altar boy. So I go to the sacristy to get dressed and the cassock that I select has an unraveled hem. I'm running out of time so I put it on anyway.
Everything was fine until...
Communion was over and I had to clear the altar. I was almost finished and I pick up the chalice with the consecrated hosts. I needed to set it on a small side table that was was at the bottom of the steps (4 of them) I take a step and my foot gets caught in the hem of the cassock. I go flying forward and never step foot on any of the steps (btw...the steps and floor were covered in carpet).
I land on my knees. I am holding the chalice with my right hand and my left hand is covering the top of it and get this...it is upright and I didn't spill anything other than my pride. I so wanted to cry.
When Mass was over we processed down the center aisle and I felt like everyone was staring at me and laughing. My mother comes to the back of the church to get me and I was so embarrassed and mad. She says she doesn't know what is going on. I told her what happened and she said that she was sure nobody noticed because they were all singing and looking in their hymnals.
As we are leaving the church, an elderly gentleman walks up to me and says, "Good catch there!" I burst into tears.
A few months later we were at a restaurant and a lady walks up to us and is talking and then she looks at me and says, "Aren't you the boy who fell off of the altar?"
Hence my fear of falling down yesterday. It CAN happen.

About Last Night
Well, as I am so prone to doing, I made a new friend at the bar who proceeded to buy me cocktails. The other three had left the premises and I actually got a phone call around 7p asking if I was going to Quadra (the birthday party).Saturday, July 26, 2008
"May I please be excused?"
We could never leave the dinner table without saying, "May I please be excused?" And we couldn't leave the dinner table until Joe or Helen (my parents) said, "Yes."
When I have been at dinner with friends, business associates, etc. I do find myself saying, "Excuse me for a moment." or "I need to excuse myself from the table." I don't ask for permission but I do let it be known that I am leaving and will be back or if I'm not coming back I also let that be known.
I have been at dinner tables when someone gets up and leaves without saying a word and to me it is a bit odd. It leaves me wondering what is going on. Were they offended by something that was said? Are they leaving and not coming back? Are they stalking somebody?
So I'm just wondering, is it common to verbally excuse yourself from the table? Just askin'.
And speaking of that, why do women go in pairs to the bathroom?
I'm sure I will see many of you at Quadra tonight. This is a birthday party that four guys put on for themselves. It is always fun because people come of out of the woodwork. Last year I ran into someone that I had not seen in forever and this is one of the first people that I met when I moved to Houston 16 years ago.
It is also fun because it isn't a fundraiser AND we don't have to bring presents! The party is at Status which is across the street from The Cha Cha Palace (the scene of Kaye Sedilla's Last Salsa.) I've never been to Status (just like I've never been to me) so exploring something new is always a delight.
Stay cool today. It's gonna hit the über high 90s here in The Bayou City!

Miss Mint Julep 2008 (Kaye Sedilla's Last Salsa)
Here are a few pics from Sunday's event. To see more, click here.

P.S. Kaye was rehearsing for the role of The Joker in the next Batman movie. Another reason to never drink and wear too much makeup.

Panic At The Disco
When it was all said and done and after the trash had been picked up I told Kaye Sedilla that it was time to go. She needed to catch a flight out of Houston and go to Palm Springs. You see...
Kaye is going to spend some time at the Betty Ford Center. Kaye Sedilla has issues to deal with and it is time to get some help. We were leaving the Cha Cha Palace and then it happened.
We were walking down San Jacinto to the car so that she could get to the airport to catch United Airways flight 2834/219/2792 out of IAH when it happened. Kaye had been overserved on adult beverages and she fell down and hit her head! Yes! Her head!
I reached over to pick her and kept asking, "Kaye Sedilla. Are you OK? Kaye Sedilla. Are you OK?"
She looked at me and said, "Who is Kaye Sedilla? My name is Sopa Pilla, honey."
All the way to IAH I kept testing her memory and finally gave up. After I got her through security and informed United Airways that she would need some help, I called the Betty Ford Center and told them that in addition to needing help with her issues, she was going to need help remembering who she is and where she came from. Just like a soap opera I tell ya!
If you would like to send a message of hope to Kaye Sedilla, please leave a comment. She will be reading Str8 Up With Twist while she is in rehab.
And check back later this week for photos from the event.
On behalf of Kaye Sedilla and the Board and staff at Legacy, I would like to thank everyone who supported this event through tips and table purchases. It all goes to a good cause. Thanx everybody!

The B!tch Is Back

And being the diva that she is, when we approached NoRO she saw all of the police on Shepherd, Memorial, Kirby and Allen Pkwy. She thought they were there for her. I had to inform her that President Bush was in town and they were securing NoRO and River Oaks for his visit. She was a bit disappointed.
And being the diva that she is, she has finagled two songs for Sunday's benefit. (Is it proper etiquette to plan an encore?) She is performing in the first set and has made arrangements to do her encore in the third set.
If she weren't going into retirement/seclusion, I'd probably be putting her in her grave (alive)!
She wants me to remind you that Mr. & Miss Mint Julep is this Sunday at Rich's (or as she likes to call it, The Cha Cha Palace). The doors open at 1:30p.m. and the show starts at 2:00p.m. I'll be in the shadows taking care of her every whim.

Kaye Sedilla's Last Salsa
This is Kaye Sedilla's Last Salsa and timing is everything (for two reasons).
1. Kaye has stated that she doesn't want to compete on the world stage with Cher, Bette, Madonna & Tina.
2. With the salmonella outbreak in tomatoes, cilantro and jalapenos it is difficult to make fresh salsa and so this is the last salsa for Kaye Sedilla.
Mr. & Miss Mint Julep Contest is a benefit for Legacy Community Health Services. It will be held at Rich's (2401 San Jacinto, Houston, TX). The doors open at 1:30 p.m. and the show will start at 2:00 p.m.

Kaye is not a contestant but is a guest performer. Kaye and the other performers and contestants will donate their tips to Legacy.
There isn't an admission fee to attend this event. However, if you are interested in purchasing a table (if you want to make sure you have a place to sit), please let me know and I will put you in contact with a representative from Legacy.
If you are unable to attend the event and would like to offer some under wire support for Kaye's performance to benefit Legacy, please contact me at:
