Epiphany

January 6 is The Feast of the Three Kings. The Feast of the Epiphany. The 12th Day of Christmas. 12th Night. The beginning of Mardi Gras.

One of my coworkers brought a Rosca de Reyes. It is the Mexican version of a King Cake. It tasted like pan dulce.

It's a long Mardi Gras season this year. Mardi Gras is on March 1 so there is plenty of time for revelry and debauchery.

I've come to the conclusion that like donuts, no two King Cakes are alike. One of my co-workers brought this to our office and yes, before you ask, it was yummy!

January 6 marks the end of the Christmas Season. It's the 12th Day Of Christmas, The Epiphany, The Feast of The Three Kings, the beginning of Mardi Gras Season. And on this day, King Cake can officially be consumed.

This stack of cakes was spotted at Whole Foods on Kirby at Alabama.

It's a short season, so eat up!

Renita didn't want us to make a fuss over her birthday so I decided to throw a Mardi Gras Party during our staff meeting. The King Cake came from Three Brothers Bakery and was yummy.

So...on my way to work on Friday, I stopped at Three Brothers Bakery on Washington Avenue in The Calvinator's former 'hood. I needed to place an order for King Cake for work on Tuesday. My intent was to order the cake and walk out of there without purchasing a pastry. #FAIL

I saw this apple crumb cake and it looked too delicious not to purchase it and share with my co-workers.

It's hard to believe that it took me so long to have my first piece of King Cake in the 2015 Mardi Gras Season. There I was, minding my own business as I am prone to doing, walking through Whole Foods on Kirby when I saw the display of cakes. I was hoping that they I wouldn't have to purchase a whole cake and could purchase a slice. Needless to say, I was happy that they had two individual slices and I only purchased one and two slices of pizza, milk, and bottled water.

There is more King Cake in my future! I can smell it!

It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

So now I have you humming that classic Christmas carol that was recorded by Andy Williams.

Well, that's not the season I'm talking about.  My time of the year is Mardi Gras Season.  My love affair with Mardi Gras began in the late 80's when I was in my late 20's.  I was invited to go to New Orleans for Mardi Gras.  I had never been to New Orleans and I had never been to Mardi Gras anywhere so I killed two birds with one stone.  And in fact, I guess you can say it became a ménage à trois.  It's a love affair between me, New Orleans and Mardi Gras.

It's not all about the debauchery and over indulgence.  It is about the beads, revelry and having a good time with family and friends.

So why did I post this today?  Well...

Yesterday, January 6, was not only The Feast of the Three Kings/Epiphany, it also signaled the beginning of Mardi Gras Season.  And Whole Foods Market was ready with the King Cake!
